6 Places to Play Pool in St. John’s

Dooly's Topsail Road

The pairing of beer and billiards is a classic that might be as old as Newfoundland itself. Some say that the first thing John Cabot did when he arrived on our shores was grab an ice cold Blue Star and head for the nearest pool hall. Luckily there are a lot more options for playing pool in St. John’s now than there were in 1497, and we’ve compiled some of the best options for you right here!

Topsail Billiards

Dooly's Topsail Road

Formerly known as Doolys, their last remaining location in Newfoundland became Topsail Billiards in 2022. The change should be in name only, as Topsail Billiards features the same great staff and atmosphere as the previous era!

Breakers Sports Lounge

Located on Torbay Road in the East End, Breakers is a place you can certainly make a whole night of. Though a bar first and foremost, they have an impressively comprehensive food menu with plenty of Newfoundland favourites.

Bar None

Bar None is on the second floor right above The Black Sheep. Go down the alley to the left of The Black Sheep from Water Street and you’ll see the entrance on the right. They offer some of the cheapest drinks in town along with free pool all the time. The only catch is that there’s just one pool table.

West Side Charlie’s

Commonly shortened by patrons to just West Side, this is a local chain with five locations in the St. John’s metro area. Several have had renovations performed lately, introducing even higher quality pool tables. Our favourite part about West Side is that most (if not all) locations have TouchTunes jukeboxes.

Plaza Bowl/Bev’s Sports Bar

First, let’s clarify the logistics between these two businesses. Plaza Bowl and Bev’s Sports Bar are connected indoors, and you can take your drinks from the bar into Plaza Bowl (provided you pour your glass bottle beverages into a plastic cup). Both areas have coin-operated pool tables, and you can really add another element to the game if you play while the neon lights of glow bowling going on. If that’s not your thing, don’t worry – the table in Bev’s Sports Bar is always well-lit. They’ve got a great selection of Newfoundland-exclusive beers!

The Rec Room

Nationwide chain The Rec Room opened its first NL location in spring 2019 in the Avalon Mall. Among many other activities for your night out, you can play pool for $2 per game or use their in-house credit system to pay.
