6 Things to Do on The Irish Loop

The Irish Loop in Newfoundland is a distribution of breathtaking communities located around the Avalon Peninsula’s shores. Because St. John’s is a part of the Loop, it is easily accessible and can even make for a great day trip. Whether you want to visit for a few hours or a few days, here are some must-do activities on The Irish Loop.

Go Whale-Watching in St. Vincent’s

St. Vincent’s is a great place to see whales without even having to leave land. The water is very deep even near the shore, so the whales have no problem getting up close and personal.

The Ferryland Lighthouse itself is quite the spectacle, but it also has a great hiking trail surrounding it. It’s an ideal lookout for spotting some Newfoundland humpbacks.

La Manche provides a nature-filled experience and could even serve as your base for exploring The Irish Loop. It has hiking trails with small waterfalls, a swimming area, and both day-use and overnight camping areas.

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located at the southern tip of the Irish Loop. To view the fossils, you’ll need to book a tour.

If the view from St. Vincent’s isn’t enough for you, take a boat tour from Bay Bulls to view whales further out in the ocean. Many tours will have Newfoundland-exclusive beer on board, too.

You can get some good views of the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve while on a Bay Bulls boat tour, but be sure to visit on foot, too.
